An Overview of Orthodontic Procedures in Agoura Hills

If you have ever noticed that you have one or a few teeth out of alignment, you may have considered some types of teeth alignment but never looked too deeply into the process. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation or stigma about teeth alignment that keeps people from getting the smile they deserve. At Integrative Dental Arts in Agoura Hills, we believe that our patients always deserve to be treated like our family. Orthodontic procedures to help you straighten your teeth are some of the most beneficial treatments we conduct for our patients to improve their oral health and appearance.

A Brief Lesson on Orthodontics

Dentists work on their patient’s oral health. While dentists typically have been concerned with the health of the gums and teeth by focusing on infection, healthy tissue, and removing bacteria, orthodontics generally focuses on the alignment of the teeth.

Orthodontic services are typically associated with braces. However, recent advances in dental sciences have resulted in several other alignment products on the market. Currently, the two most popular methods of aligning teeth are braces and Invisalign. These two different methods for straightening teeth are suitable for most patients, but there are some critical differences between the two.

A Breakdown of Braces

Braces use dental hardware attached directly to the surface of your teeth. Their structure allows your dentist to gradually adjust the tension between the teeth to pull or push them into the proper alignment over time.

Braces gained notoriety because they have been one of the oldest methods for straightening teeth. However, they have also gained some negative notoriety in pop culture, making some people more hesitant to look any further.

Understanding Invisalign

Another popular approach to straightening teeth is Invisalign. This product is a relatively new approach to straightening teeth and utilizes an impression of your teeth and then a digital plan to bring your teeth into proper alignment with a series of different steps. Each set of aligners is designed to be worn for a few weeks. After that time, the teeth will slightly move closer to their optimal position, and a new set of aligners is used to make further progress.

The Differences Between Braces and Invisalign

Many people believe that braces are used for children while Invisalign is better for adults. This is due, in large part, to the notion that the aligners used in Invisalign are removable and easy to lose and that braces can’t be misplaced. Additionally, many people believe that the clear aligners make them less visible and more conducive to adults who don’t want to alter their physical appearance. Finally, aligners can be removed at any time. The success of the Invisalign approach is primarily due to a person’s ability to wear them more often. This can sometimes be more difficult for children or adolescents.

While these factors are true, it is crucial to evaluate your unique situation to see which approach is best for you. If you have been considering orthodontics to help straighten your teeth, call the friendly staff at our Agoura Hills office to work with you for the smile you deserve!
